THE SCHOOL
Don Sahli founded Sahli School of Art on February 15, 1995. His purpose in founding the school was to perpetuate the Russian School of Painting in which he was trained. Beginning students, as well as professional artists, come together at the school to continue this Russian heritage.
TEACHING METHOD - THE ART OF PAINTING
Apprenticeship
Apprentice: n. one who is learning, by practical experience under a skilled worker, a trade, art, or calling.
“My goal is to teach one to ‘see,’ not to paint by formula,” says Sahli. Working closely with each student, he bases the form of his instruction on the student’s unique understanding of the world and of art. With this understanding, the teacher and the student establish a valuable means of communication - the teacher becomes ever more effective in his teaching as the student becomes ever more effective in his or her learning.
Artistic growth—and confidence—emerges. This is how the Russian painter, Sergei Bongart, taught Sahli. And how Bongart was taught by Peter Kotov, who was taught by Nicolai Fechin, who was taught by Ilya Repin, the fountainhead of all modern Russian painting.
Sahli’s personalized teaching method insures everyone’s success. From initial sketch to the final brush stroke, he works side-by-side with his students, sharing his approach to the art of painting. Commenting here, admonishing there, taking the brush to demonstrate, handing it back for the student to emulate, all while defining his unique painting philosophy. The classical principles of art are respected, as are individual artistic differences.
PLEIN AIR GARDEN AND STUDIO WORKSHOPS
Artists of all abilities are welcomed at the Plein Air Garden and Studio Workshops. Instruction is individual, class size is limited and a wonderful atmosphere of artistic fellowship and camaraderie is enjoyed. Make the dream of being a painter a reality.
Sahli School of Art offers these workshops at Don Sahli's teaching studio and garden in Evergreen, Colorado. Demonstrations, lectures, and slide presentations are routinely scheduled to highlight the principles being taught. The first-time oil painter, as well as the intermediate to advanced painter, will find the Plein Air Garden and Studio Workshops artistically demanding and exceptionally rewarding.
WORKSHOP FORMATS
Workshop: n. a seminar emphasizing free discussion, exchange of ideas and practical methods, skills and principles.
Studio
Studio: n. a place for the study of art; the working place of a painter or sculptor.
Students, working in oil, learn and expand the fundamental principles of painting: color relationships and harmony, design, composition, and form. Painting a wide variety of still-life arrangements allows them to examine these principles with a disciplined and manageable approach. A first-time painter will be led patiently through these basics, while an advanced professional will be guided through nuances by receiving challenging goals, problem-specific exercises, and insightful criticism.
Plein Air
Plein Air: adj. of or relating to painting in outdoor daylight
Painting outdoors, students produce small color sketches or field studies. Students learn to use the tools of value, color, and temperature to quickly capture the essence of the scene. Bringing the studio outdoors, experiencing the elements as one works adds new dimensions of complexity to painting. Through a step-by-step process, Sahli reveals the essentials of plein-air painting and how to break down complex landscape into "simple pieces." Sahli provides hands-on guidance at a level appropriate for each person. Students discover the pleasure and challenge of being part of the fellowship of plein air painters.
